Summary

This searing graphic memoir portrays gun violence through a fresh lens, giving it urgency, humanity, and a very personal hope

Kindra Neely never expected it to happen to her。 No one does。 Sure, she’d sometimes been close to gun violence, like when the house down the street from her childhood home in Texas was targeted in a drive-by shooting。 But now she lived in Oregon, where she spent her time swimming in rivers with friends or attending classes at the bucolic Umpqua Community College。

And then, one day, it happend: a mass shooting shattered her college campus。 Over the span of a few minutes, on October 1, 2015, eight students and a professor lost their lives。 And suddenly, Kindra became a survivor。 This empathetic and ultimately hopeful graphic memoir recounts Kindra’s journey forward from those few minutes that changed everything。

It wasn’t easy。 Every time Kindra took a step toward peace and wholeness, a new mass shooting devastated her again。 Las Vegas。 Parkland。 She was hopeless at times, feeling as if no one was listening。 Not even at the worldwide demonstration March for Our Lives。  But finally, Kindra learned that—for her—the path toward hope wound through art, helping others, and sharing her story。

The impact of a mass shooting continues long after the crime scene has been restored and the headlines pivot to a new story。 Kindra Neely learned this firsthand after she survived a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, which left ten people dead and as many injured。 Later, after matriculating at Georgia’s Savannah College of Art and Design, she continued to suffer from racing thoughts and panic attacks as a result of the trauma she had experienced。 Ongoing news alerts t The impact of a mass shooting continues long after the crime scene has been restored and the headlines pivot to a new story。 Kindra Neely learned this firsthand after she survived a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, which left ten people dead and as many injured。 Later, after matriculating at Georgia’s Savannah College of Art and Design, she continued to suffer from racing thoughts and panic attacks as a result of the trauma she had experienced。 Ongoing news alerts to other mass shootings re-traumatized her time and again。 Eventually, she began to heal and to use her artwork to share her story。 The end result is this excellent, introspective graphic memoir in which Kindra bravely shares her survivor’s journey。 The color palette is generally cued to Kindra’s emotions; she includes moments of despair, anger, hope, and gratitude。 As mass shootings continue, sadly the need for survivors to voice their stories will, too。 。。。more

A very touching memoir that covered an important issue students face today。 Many points Kindra made here reflect what I have felt over the years and during my time in school, as well as what my students have said to me。 The most heartbreaking part of reading this wasn't the number of shootings I recognized, but the ones I've never heard of before。 I cried through the entire book and finished it in one sitting。 I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels emotionally ready to read it。 A very touching memoir that covered an important issue students face today。 Many points Kindra made here reflect what I have felt over the years and during my time in school, as well as what my students have said to me。 The most heartbreaking part of reading this wasn't the number of shootings I recognized, but the ones I've never heard of before。 I cried through the entire book and finished it in one sitting。 I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels emotionally ready to read it。 。。。more

I think this is an important story for anyone to read, whether or not a mass shooting has directly impacted your life。 Understanding perspectives of survivors is vital, sympathy is one thing, empathy is a whole other beast。 I have a lot of emotions after reading this that I can't put into words, but I am so glad that Kindra told this story。 I think this is an important story for anyone to read, whether or not a mass shooting has directly impacted your life。 Understanding perspectives of survivors is vital, sympathy is one thing, empathy is a whole other beast。 I have a lot of emotions after reading this that I can't put into words, but I am so glad that Kindra told this story。 。。。more

This graphic novel was a great representation of the trauma that our mass shootings create, on a personal level and on a societal level。 Kindra's vulnerability in sharing her story and her use of her illustration and colors to convey feelings and emotions is very powerful。 This graphic novel was a great representation of the trauma that our mass shootings create, on a personal level and on a societal level。 Kindra's vulnerability in sharing her story and her use of her illustration and colors to convey feelings and emotions is very powerful。 。。。more

Kindra is an undecided student at a community college in Oregon when a school shooting occurs。 In the aftermath, she experiences PTSD: panic attacks, bursts of anger, flashbacks, depression, and numbness。 At one point she even attempts suicide, but after having a change of heart when a friend calls, she pushes forward and moves across the country to attend art school。 But every time a shooting occurs around the country, the old feelings resurface。 Kindra captures the array of feelings experience Kindra is an undecided student at a community college in Oregon when a school shooting occurs。 In the aftermath, she experiences PTSD: panic attacks, bursts of anger, flashbacks, depression, and numbness。 At one point she even attempts suicide, but after having a change of heart when a friend calls, she pushes forward and moves across the country to attend art school。 But every time a shooting occurs around the country, the old feelings resurface。 Kindra captures the array of feelings experienced by many a school shooting survivor, both by herself and through her friends。 Political takes on gun control are mentioned, but most of this focuses on Kindra's mental health struggles and her recovery。 Understandably, her feelings are complicated - I'm sure many young people who have experienced a shooting firsthand and even those who have not will identify with those feelings。 Considering how many school shootings happen around the country each year, a book like this is so, so important。 I also loved the art style and I'm surprised the author decided so late that art was her calling! This ends on a hopeful note and includes several resources for suicide prevention and survivors of school shootings。Content advisory: depiction of attempted suicide ((view spoiler)[carbon monoxide poisoning in her garage (hide spoiler)]) 。。。more

Some parts were just a little confusing and I kept thinking I had skipped some panels, but hadn't。 It felt a bit disjointed。 Otherwise, I think it was an important story to tell about PTSD。 Some parts were just a little confusing and I kept thinking I had skipped some panels, but hadn't。 It felt a bit disjointed。 Otherwise, I think it was an important story to tell about PTSD。 。。。more

I enjoyed this young adult graphic novel about mass shootings, depression, suicide and survival。 Unfortunately, all of these topics are becoming too prevelant in our society today。 I recommend it as a way to have some hard conversations with your kids。 It reads very quickly。

This graphic novel memoir about gun violence and its aftermath was a very important story and I’m grateful for the perspective it brought。 I’m especially glad to read something from someone who was on campus the day of a school shooting, since I don’t often see books like this written。 The book itself was a little confusing and jumped around at times。 I did read an ARC, so it’s possible that will change。

I was given an advanced reader copy thanks to Kindra's publicist。 I would never had thought I would enjoy the graphic memoir as much as I did。 Yes, it's about a school shooting and Kindra's experience but it deals with so much more than that。 She tackles subjects of depression and suicide and what people perceive it to be versus what is actually is。 Without getting too political, she briefly mentions the elections and the March of Our Lives protest and how it tied into her experience of living t I was given an advanced reader copy thanks to Kindra's publicist。 I would never had thought I would enjoy the graphic memoir as much as I did。 Yes, it's about a school shooting and Kindra's experience but it deals with so much more than that。 She tackles subjects of depression and suicide and what people perceive it to be versus what is actually is。 Without getting too political, she briefly mentions the elections and the March of Our Lives protest and how it tied into her experience of living through the physical and mental traumas without sugarcoating or writing it very darkly。 She writes honest and authentic about topics that people sometimes wish not to address or mention。 I'm definitely going to recommend it to others。 。。。more

ARC copy provided by The Novl。 A powerful graphic memoir depicting the aftermath of a survivor of a mass shooting。 Numb to This provides a significant insight into the life of a survivor- the PTSD, the numbness of society, the depression。 A beautifully illustrated and impactful memoir for a world that has become numb to the devastation of mass shootings。

Interesting read, but hard to really connect with the author。 I understand that dealing with a traumatic event can take its toll on a person, but this doesn't feel like something kids could relate to。 Not a Sequoyah book。。。 in my opinion。 Interesting read, but hard to really connect with the author。 I understand that dealing with a traumatic event can take its toll on a person, but this doesn't feel like something kids could relate to。 Not a Sequoyah book。。。 in my opinion。 。。。more

Kindra never expected to be in a school shooting, no one does。 Kindra is a survive and this graphic novel tells her story of survival, of fear, of courage and most importantly hope。 This story was needed, it really shows how numb to mass shooting that we have become over the years and how that is a problem that we need to address。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I really appreciated this graphic memoir。 I think it is an incredibly important story to share。 It is not graphic and is definitely suitable for middle school students。 It did not make political statements outside of the demand for the victims to be heard。 Overall the focus was on the victims feelings and experience which I found priceless。 The timeline felt disjointed at times and I could have appreciated years at the top to give reference, but overall a must read。

A powerful graphic novel memoir depicting the aftermath of a survivor of a mass shooting。 The illustrations were muted, to enhance the author’s pov & depression。 This is the first YA book I have read that helps the reader understand the after effects of a survivor。 Only issue I had was that it felt like it quickly jumped scenes, that some info was left out。 TW: suicidal thoughts; shootings; violence

This was an impactful graphic novel detailing a school shooting and the aftermath for one student。 I expected for this to effect me more than it did so not sure what the disconnect was。 I don’t want to be numb to it, but maybe that’s the point of the book。

A great memoir about PTSD。 I particularly love that Neely wrote this book because it was the kind of book she was looking for herself。 Hopefully it will be of comfort to others。
